There’s always more to education than in the classroom; hence, why we were delighted to be invited to the 2019 Manufactures Night at UBC. After last year’s enthusiasm from the students to learn, educate and keep up with modern advancements in the pharmaceutical sciences world, we were excited about returning to UBC. Meeting the 200+ future pharmacists of our community, engaging and enlightening them on our story, products and research.

The evening allowed pharmacy students to engage with over 20 manufactures in the industry. Promoting education and professional development, getting to expand their knowledge on various companies, products, research and meeting with people in the industry.

The evening began with a welcome speech from the Associate Professor and Executive Director of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty; Dr. Kerry Wilbur followed by the LKS Co-Presidents, and Manufactures Night Coordinators. Students were broken into groups for a manufacture rotation period, allowing us to present to a group of students for 7 minutes at a time. Each group session was wrapped up with a question, upon which the person with the correct answer would receive a raffle ticket and enter into a draw for the winning of the manufactures hampers. We targeted our questions as if we were a customer like you, coming into the Pharmacy or Natural Health Food Store and having a question on SierraSil! This helped keep the students engaged, because who doesn’t want to win a hamper full of goodies!

Students were given free time to go back to the manufactures they were particularly interested in and ask questions, allowing them to obtain a deeper understanding. Many of the students came back to SierraSil to learn more about our Human Clinical Research Studies. We thrive on being an ethical company and having data to back up what we say. The students got to learn a lot about our products. They were particularly interested in our Joint Formula Curcumin product and Pain Relief Topical Spray, both acting as a hot topic of the evening. Some of the students had informed us they had just studied Curcumin this week in lectures. We also found out, not only had the students attended Manufactures night that evening, but some also sat an exam that very same day! Telling us how their wrists were sore from writing as fast as they could to complete the exam, others saying their backs were sore from sitting hunched over their books in preparation for the exam. This is where our demo Pain Relief Topical Spray came in really handy for them! Having students coming running up to us, looking for a sample to try out there and then. We received a lot of “this is a magical spray!”, “my pain is gone”, “this really works!” and “where can I buy this?”. Putting smiles on all our faces.

The evening finished up with the raffle and closing remarks from the organizers, ending the manufactures 2019 evening.

We thoroughly enjoyed the evening, engaging with our future pharmacists. Sharing our joy of healthy active living. We at SierraSil want to make a difference in people’s lives, allowing everyone to enjoy life to the fullest, helping individuals to become more active and healthy again.

Pain is a big deal for a lot of the population, with chronic pain affecting 1 out of 5 people. This has trigged an opioid crisis with no solution in sight so far…!

We attended the On a Scale of 1 to 10 movie premiere in VanCity Theatre, Vancouver last Tuesday. Directed and produced by Citrus Pie Media Group. SierraSil, sponsored the screening of this fantastic documentary addressing the issue of chronic pain offering hope to people who are affected by it.

Director Laurent Goldstein and producer Jennifer Unruh began this project two years ago, going on a journey through North America. Interviewing top experts in the industry, “who often challenge our traditional belief around chronic pain and open our minds to our bodies and its innate power to heal”⁽¹⁾. Our very own, Mr. Michael Bentley (President of SierraSil), was interviewed and features in this documentary.

The evening began with the meeting and mingling of sponsors, cast members and attendees. We spoke with many attendants who were there to learn more about ways of addressing pain that they may be suffering from, as well as connecting with others in our industry. Learning from each other, staying informed on the various products currently on the market, while also keeping up to date on new research and potential future discoveries.

After the meeting, mingling and welcoming comments. Our eyes and ears began on a 2 hour journey across North America and Canada with Laurent. Hearing individual’s stories and how they naturally overcame the challenges they were facing in their lives due to pain.

After the screening of the documentary, the floor opened up for a panel discussion allowing the audience to engage with the film creators and cast members. Closing the evening with a very exciting raffle, where many of the organizations and businesses in attendance generously donated gift hampers with products and/or treatments up for the grabs. The atmosphere in the room after this special event was inspiring and uplifting, knowing that there is hope for people who suffer with chronic pain, making everybody excited to be in the industry we are in.

Being a local Vancouver based company ourselves with a vison to make one million people or more lead more active and healthier lives naturally. Contributing to the health and wellbeing of people in our community and society. Meeting such passionate attendants, health care practitioners and Doctors from all over the North Americas region. We were truly delighted to be part of this journey.

In recognizing Michael at the their annual CHFA West Conference, Mike Fata, CHFA Board Chair and Founder of Manitoba Harvest Hemp, said that Michael has been actively engaged in their regulatory and government relations efforts for many years and has also volunteered his time with the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) to advance industry goals. Mike noted that SierraSil Health has made significant efforts in terms of research and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) which contribute to improving the standards of NHPs and the overall maturity of the industry and added that Michael’s interest and commitment have been invaluable and a great example for others in the industry, including his being a volunteer in community organizations.

In acknowledging the honour, Michael thanked Mike and the selection committee, and paid tribute to the previous John Holtmann Award recipients as well as John Holtmann and his foundational contributions to the natural health industry. He thanked the team at SierraSil, SierraSil’s key business partners, Ecotrend Ecologics and GFR Pharma, his wife Lesley, and the Quality Control and operations personnel, whom he described as the unsung heroes of our industry. Michael also thanked the pioneers of the industry, the staff at the CHFA and the responsible manufacturers and educators of our industry for helping to move it from being “alternative” to main stream for people seeking to optimize healthy living.
