Let’s make Canada the Fittest Nation on Earth

Did you know that only 15% of adults are meeting Canada's Physical Activity Guidelines? Are you reaching the recommended 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity per week? While we gear up towards National Health and Fitness Day (NHFD), an initiative to mark one day, the first Saturday in June, as the day when Canadians get out and get active in any way they wish, we want to encourage our community to get moving. Everyday we are striving to achieving our mission of helping over 1 million people live healthier and more active lives. Being active for at least 150 minutes per week can improve fitness, strength, mental health, and help boost self-esteem. Participating in your favourite physical activities can also help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke and obesity. Regardless of your age, ability or level of experience, there is an activity that is right for you. Take a moment to browse through ParticipACTION’s 150 Play List. Each activity on the list includes adaptations and variations, ensuring that anyone can participate. If you do not meet the daily requirements, don’t sweat it, it’s much easier than it sounds. Exercising should be part of your daily self-care routine and should encompass activities that you enjoy. Here are 3 steps to living a more active life: Step 1: Pick a time that works best for you. If 60 minutes of exercise at one time is not achievable, aim for bouts of 10 minutes to start. Step 2: Pick an activity. Make a list of activities that you enjoy. It can be as simple as a brisk walk, taking up a favourite sport or raking the leaves. Step 3: Invite a friend or join a community group. Staying active is much more enjoyable when you partner with a friend or a group. Join a weekday fitness class or catch up with a friend during a run. It's time to get up, get out, and get active!
